When the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1898 after the Spanish-American War, the United States gained control of numerous empires of Spain including the Philippines.
Even though the ownership of the country was changed, the Philippine nationalists continued to push for their independence from imperialism. The United States wanted to import raw material from the Philippines to make industrial textiles and sell the newly made goods to the Philippines. It is natural that this happened considering it was the peak of the Industrial Revolution in Europe and America. |
